"Athlone" in your own words

Athlone is located about ten to twelve minutes drive away from the Cape Town City Centre. Athlone also one of the oldest areas on the Cape Flats today as some of it's churches date back to the late 1800's. Also a dumping ground of people during the Group Areas Act of 1950. It is an area comprising of a rich cultural heritage that people are extremely proud of. A place of warmth and welcoming generosity.

Zainunnissa "Cissie" Gool was the daughter of Dr Abdullah Abdurahman. She was the first non-white woman to complete a MA degree in Psychology and also the first non-white woman to practise law in South Africa, which she did in 1963 at 63 years of age. She was also the only non-white woman to sit on the Cape Town City Council before 1994, and also helped to form the Non-European United Front. There is an Avenue named after Cissie Gool in Rylands.
