The Adderley Street Night Market is the perfect place to shop, eat, party or simply spend some quality time with those you love. This year the market runs from 17 to 30 December, from 7pm until midnight. More than 180 stalls with sell local crafts, food, gifts, jewellery, clothes and home and garden accessories, and local vocal talent will entertain you from a number of stages around Adderley Street.
Children will be entertained in a Kiddies Corner, or by the wandering face painters, balloon benders, magicians and trapeze artists – and you don’t need to be a child to enjoy this, as the entertainment promises to amuse even the most hardened cynic.
The nearby Darling Street Interactive Zone will host what promises to be the best Matric results party in Cape Town, as well as performances and exhibitions that raise awareness about drug misuse.
Cheryl Peters, the events coordinator for the Central City Improvement District (CIDS) and project manager for the Adderley Street Night Market, says that ‘drug abuse and addiction is linked to theft, violent crime, gangsterism and an increase in sexual misconduct and abuse.‘We want to use this opportunity to educate communities through performances and exhibitions in the Interactive Zone.’
The programme will start with a human chain and includes an exhibition and counselling as well as film screenings, alternative lifestyle options and the grand finale of a Hip Hop competition,’ explains Peters.
The night market offers safe parking and cordoned off streets, as well as a missing kids section for the little ones who can slip so easily through your fingers. Emergency services will also be in attendance.
