Employers have until Friday to submit their Pay As You Earn (PAYE) reconciliation declarations to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

SARS had earlier extended the deadline to 12 September 2008 after receiving tens of thousands of applications for extensions. This allowed them more time to submit payroll information without facing penalties.

The earlier deadline on 29 August saw some 130 000 employers submitting payroll declarations together with 10 million tax certificates of their employees.

This process enables SARS to start preparing a unique, customised pre-populated income tax return for the first time for millions of individual taxpayers.

In a statement at the time SARS said businesses had gone to great lengths to comply but many smaller businesses and tax practitioners had struggled to meet their obligations on time.

SARS is able to, via its call centre, provide assistance to do an electronic payroll reconciliation using the e@syFile software.

SARS has also established a call line to handle calls in six of South Africa's 11 official languages, and an individual can call 0800 00 7277 to order a tax return telephonically.

There remains the challenge of accuracy of information as some tax certificates received do not contain a tax reference number of have different Identification Document (ID) numbers or names to those on record.

From 1 September, individual taxpayers were able to request a manual customised income tax return from SARS, as it marked the beginning of the filing period for individuals and the second phase of the 2008 Tax Season.

From 15 September paper versions of the tax return will be available from SARS branches and will be available electronically from - BuaNews
