School Mission Statement
To provide an education for the broader Athlone community, addressing the physical, cultural, social and emotional needs. Education will take the form of a multifaceted interdisciplinary approach.

Athlone High School was established in 1947 and was the first "coloured" high school on the Cape Flats. The only two other schools, offering high school education to non-whites at the time, were Trafalgar and Livingstone High Schools.

The first principal of the school was S.V. Petersen, a renowned afrikaans poet. As a result of this, many students were attracted to the school from as far afield as South West Africa.
