Current Survey: The Housing List Debate

Does the Housing Minister have a right to remove protesters from the waiting list?

Most recent results from 334 participants:
Yes: 34%
No: 57%
Unsure: 9%

On the housing listThe current poll is in regards to the recent protest action encountered near Langa. People were demonstrating against the fact that they were to be forcibly relocated to Delft in order to make way for the progression of the N2 Gateway Housing Development.

On the morning of 10 September 2007, protesters gathered near Langa to demonstrate against what they termed as "forcible removals". Sometime during the demonstration, violence broke out and police were shot at and pelted with stones. Both lanes of the N2 freeway were shut down to traffic, causing chaos to commuters in the morning peak-hour.

The Housing Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, has warned the protesters that, should they not cooperate, they will be completely removed from all housing waiting lists.

Do you feel that the Housing Minister is within her rights to remove people from the waiting list if they continue their demonstrations?

It can be agreed upon that protests should be a peaceful way of drawing attention to suffering, and that the violence may have therefore been unjustified. It is also callous to cause any disruption to bystanders who have not cause or can affect the situation in any way. But should the response to such actions be the removal of an undelivered promise?
