Do you think that Athlone Stadium should be Cape Town's primary venue for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup?

Date Started: 2006-06-25
Date Concluded: 2006-09-18
The question focussed on the community's feedback as to where they would like the 2010 World Cup soccer matches in Cape Town to be held. We asked simply whether the visitors to the site would like Athlone Stadium to be the primary venue for the City and gave 3 options: yes, no or unsure. With the growing importance of sport in the country and the increasing interest in football, one could only imagine what it would be like to have teams battling it out on a stadium built in their community for the ultimate sporting prize. The result of the poll showed that an overwhelming number of participants felt that Athlone Stadium should be the cities primary venue for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. This comes despite the cities recent decision to make Green Point Stadium the venue. The actual figures were:
Yes 136 (87%) ; No 16 (10%) and Unsure 5 (3%). The total number of votes counted was 157.

We will need a big stadium to possibly host a quarter final, semi-final and perhaps even the opening game. Newlands is a 50000 seater and even that will not be enough. The new Green Point stadium will be near hotels and the city centre. The location alone would diffuse many of our transport woes, but it would also be a new, hi-tech and versatile stadium which could host many future world stage events. My vote is for a new stadium. Have a little faith.
