Current immigration laws need to be reviewed in light of the challenges currently facing South Africa, says Home Affairs Deputy Minister Malusi Gigaba.

Addressing the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) on the attacks on people from other countries on Thursday, the minister said a review of migration laws will also enable government to manage migration better.

Mr Gigaba said managing immigration was not easy as South Africa was one of the countries experiencing a large inflow of immigrants.

"We acknowledge that combating immigration is complex and we try by all means to manage the situation especially irregular immigration," the minister said.

Since the attacks started, more than 1 300 people have been arrested and 13 of those have been charged with murder.

He encouraged all relevant stakeholders to continue engaging in these debates in order to ease tensions within communities.

Human Rights Commission Chairman Jody Kolapen called on government, the private sector, organisations and communities to work collectively in tackling issues of national concern.

"We need to constantly measure our collective responsibility as a country, and this should serve as a wake up call on our preparedness in dealing with situations such as these," said Mr Kolapen, referring to the recent attacks.

It is reported that 35 000 and 40 000 people have so far been displaced, with some of these people in the process of returning to their home countries.

Around 15 000 Mozambican nationals are believed to have returned to their country.

Government has set up temporary shelters for the displaced people to be moved to until they can be reintegrated. - BuaNews
