Salaams to all my readers

The time has come for me to bid farewell to all of you (albeit temporarily) as I embark on my journey of a lifetime within the next few days.

Some of you may recall a few weeks ago I wrote about the fact that my father and I were accredited to go on Hajj but not my mother and sisters.

At the time all we could do was ask for your prayers that my entire family will be able to perform Hajj this year. Alghamdulilah (by the grace of Allah) our prayers have been answered.

So this week I, Nurene Jassiem, wish to take this opportunity on behalf of myself, my parents Shoukry and Sharifa (ne Rajap) and sisters Rafeeqa and Basheerah, to bid salaam to all relatives, friends and all my readers on our departure to Mecca for Hajj and Umrah Insha Allah (God-willing).

As we will be asking Allah for forgiveness when we stand on the plains of Arafat, I would like to take this opportunity to ask your forgiveness for anything I may have said or done, knowingly or unknowingly, that may have offended you in any way.

It is my humble request that you pray for our safe passage to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina and that we will have the strength to fulfil all our obligations along the way especially on the plains of Arafat.

I will not forget to make dua (pray) for everyone, and although I will not remember all of you by name, I will be sure to ask that the Almighty keep you safe and that your prayers be answered.

To my Muslim readers, I will make dua that those of you who have not yet been afforded the opportunity to perform Hajj will also be able to undertake this holy journey and for those who have been, that you may one day see the Holy Land again.

I look forward to the next week when family and friends will gather at our home to sit and talk about their travels.

I thank all of you for your prayers over the past few weeks and for the support you have given me as a reporter since I became apart of your lives a few months ago. As I sit at my desk typing this column, I will admit that I have mixed emotions.

One the one hand I am excited to embark on my journey and on the other I fear the uncharted territory I?m about to enter.

So, for the next few weeks I leave you in the very capable hands of my colleague, Melissa Papier, who will work on People's Post Athlone while I am away.

I trust that you will open your hearts and homes to her as you have done with me and look forward to interacting with you again in the new year. For now I will take my leave and say: Fee Amaanillah (I leave you in the protection of Allah).
