The Manenberg and Athlone policing areas are ranked ninth and tenth respectively for the areas with the highest rate of attempted murder in Cape Town.

This is according to statistics released by the Information Management Department of the South African Police Service last week, which show that Manenberg had 68 reported cases of attempted murder for the period April 2005 to March 2006 compared to 59 the previous year.

Athlone also had a substantial increase in attempted murder, with 49 cases reported in the 2005-2006 period compared to 35 during the corresponding period the previous year.

With 650 cases of reported drug-related crime, Manenberg ranked seventh in the city, marking its highest total for this crime over the past five years.

Although Athlone saw a marked increase in the number of possession of firearms and ammunition cases, which escalated from 14 in 2004-2005 to 47 this past year, the station commander believes this is not necessarily a negative statistic.

"I see it as a positive increase because this means that we are getting more illegal firearms out of the community," Director Anand Pillay of the Athlone Police Station said.

He added that increased awareness campaigns around child abuse could be a contributing factor to the increase in the reported incidents of neglect and ill-treatment of children.

Most other crime statistics remained stable in the Athlone policing area, although there was a decrease in rape from 51 to 41; common assault from 466 to 405; common robbery from 302 to 224 and burglary at residential premises from 561 to 485.

The Manenberg policing area saw a drastic decrease in theft cases, from 1 634 in the 2004-2005 period to 848 in the 2005-2006 period.

Other categories which saw marked decreases in the Manenberg policing area were crimen injuria, which decreased to 125 from 317 the previous year; malicious damage to property, which dropped from 500 to 314, and neglect and ill-treatment of children, which dropped significantly from 30 in the 2004-2005 period to five in the newest statistics.

Senior Superintendent Pierre Laubscher of the Manenberg Police Station said he had no comment on the statistics.
