The South African Football Association (Safa) Cape Town has slapped a five year suspension on the Local Football Association (LFA) Northern Suburbs and fined them R7 000 to be paid within 30 days.

According to a Safa Cape Town disciplinary report, the LFA Northern Suburbs were guilty of contravening the constitution by participating in an "unauthorised tournament" in July.

The sledge hammer approach adopted by the Safa Cape Town disciplinary committee to silence the LFA Northern Suburbs LFA threatens to widen the cracks in the foundation of the 100 000 member amateur provincial body.

The LFA Northern Suburbs, which is chaired by Les Mondo, has been one of the strongest critics of the Safa Cape Town executive elected in May.

Mondo's LFA is currently locked in an ongoing hearing with the Safa at national level to declare the elections null and void because a financial statement was not tabled at the meeting.

Safa Cape Town chairperson, Les Julies, and his secretary, Clive Bailey, failed to fulfil a promise of providing People's Post with a copy of the disciplinary report. The report was subsequently obtained from another source. Harry Fisher, who serves on the LFA Northern Suburbs secretariat, says the "suspension and fine are unwarranted".

"We are appalled at the disciplinary committee's decision. Yes, we will definitely lodge an appeal," says Fisher.

The alleged unauthorised tourney, called the Super District Challenge Cup, was contested by LFA Northern Suburbs and the Rygate and Cape District soccer business units from Rylands and Wynberg respectively.

Rygate and Cape District have already been slammed by their parent body, the LFA Greater Athlone, for taking part in the event without the approval of the LFA, which is considering giving them the boot.

The two business units could face a similar fate to that of the LFA Northern Suburbs when they meet the Safa Cape Town disciplinary committee tonight.
