One hundred learners from high schools in Athlone recently participated in a community outreach programme hosted by the Legal Aid Board.

The day included a Fairplay event "aimed at promoting a rules-based society among the youth and discouraging lawlessness among learners," says Christopher Motabogi, communications manager for the Legal Aid Board.

Mark Gaffley, Athlone Justice Centre Executive, says the programme intends teaching people about the law and their rights. It is also aimed at providing job shadowing opportunities for young people.

"This is the second year that we are running this project. We would like to assist young people to not only get educated about legal issues, but also to get into other professions. Our main focus with regard to legal issues is children's and human rights," he adds.

The Embili Youth Empowerment group offered career advice to learners at the event. Lynette September from Embili says one of the main reasons for giving career guidance to youth is to "get them to realise that there is hope". The learners drafted eight slogans which were spray-painted on to a wall as part of a mural at Athlone High School.

Well-known mural artist Falko from Mitchell's Plain, who has been painting murals for 16 years, painted the wall.
