A nationwide campaign will be launched in the Eastern Cape on Friday targeting young South Africans to apply for their ID documents.

The Department of Home Affairs' "ID Yourself" campaign encourages 16-year-old's, particularly those in Grade 10 and 12, to apply for their ID documents so that they can exercise their right to vote during the country's general and local government elections next year.

In April this year, the campaign visited the Moukangoe High School in the rural village of Ga-Motodi outside Burgersfort in Limpopo.

"The core objective of the campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of having an ID document," said the Home Affairs Deputy Minister Malusi Gigaba's spokesperson, Bayanda Mzoneli.

According to Mr Mzoneli all what is needed is a birth certificate and two small ID photos when one is applying for am ID document.

"Once you get it, be sure to keep it safe, because if you lose it you will have to pay to get another one," he said.

Once young people get their ID documents, they will be part of writing South Africa's history when they register and vote during the national general elections next year.

Young people across the country are asked to be on the lookout for the Home Affairs mobile trucks which will be visiting their respective schools in the coming months. - BuaNews
