A 20 year old youth from Athlone, Raees Osman, appeared in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Friday, 29 September in connection with the murder of his father, after he was arrested by the Lansdowne Police the preceding Monday.

According to Detective Inspector Candice van der Spuy, the youth was driving with his father in a blue Opel Corsa bakkie on Friday, 22 September.

"Apparently the youth asked his father, who lives in Grassy Park, to retrieve him in Athlone. While driving down Clive Road in Lansdowne, the car came to a halt and four shots rang out."

"The suspect fled the scene and ran towards Lansdowne Railway Station."

The father, Tauric Achmat, sustained four shots to his head and died on the scene.

"There were no cartridges or firearms found on the scene but we are awaiting ballistic reports to confirm which weapon was used to kill Achmat."

Further investigations by the Lansdowne Police led to the arrest of Osman on Monday, 25 September.
