While the Sharks and the Bulls were headed for the first Super14 final between two South African sides, a little bit of history also unfolded at the City Park sportsfield in Crawford on Saturday.
It was the clash of the centurions between Progress RFC, showing new zest after their 100 year celebration last season, and the 109-year-old Retreat RFC.
Progress beat their arch rivals 8-6 in this WP Fifth Division match, with both clubs drawing confidence from the competitiveness of their players.
Progress recorded the only try when scrumhalf Jacque Moketsi broke away from a five metre scrum to score. Progress crossed for an unconverted try in the first half.
However, Retreat lead 6-5 at the break, after flyhalf Claude Pedro goaled two consecutive penalties.
The match-winning points were added by Progress fullback Jethro Cloete, who goaled a 40 metre penalty.
Cloete was replaced soon afterwards by veteran fullback Cassiem Isaacs, after sustaining a knee injury.
The outstanding play of Moketsi and lock Samora Machel helped Progress retain their lead in a tense finish.
The hosts feared they could surrender their lead in the last minute when Retreat were awarded a threatening penalty on the halfway line.
However, Pedro's 40 metre kick that could have earned Retreat their first win in two matches went wide of the posts.
Retreat's best players on the day were eighthman Graham Daniels and fullback Gerard Johnson. This augurs well for their clash with Cities at the Allenby Drive sportsfield in Retreat on Saturday.
The match will start at 16:00.
