City Mayor, Helen Zille, has called an inter-denominational meeting of religious and community leaders in the Cape Town Civic Centre on Thursday as part of her campaign to curb drug abuse in the community.

The objective is to devise an effective programme that will counter drug trafficking at source and thus negate the need for conflict between PAGAD and the gangs.

"While we identify with the anger of parents whose children are being targeted by drug dealers, we aim to give people an effective alternative to vigilantism", says Mayor Zille.

The Draft Operational Strategy for preventing alcohol and drug abuse in Cape Town, released on Tuesday to mark international drug awareness day, will provide a departure point.

The City seeks guidance from religious and community leaders based in affected communities, and will appeal to them to communicate to residents that a practical solution for reducing drug abuse is possible.

Councillors from other affected communities are also invited to attend.

A presentation on the City's policy on evicting drug dealers from council owned property will be made by the head of legal strategy, Mr Lungelo Mbandazayo.

All media are invited to attend.
