The Mayor of Cape Town, Helen Zille, is to institute urgent disciplinary measures against Metro Police officers who took part in an unauthorised protest during peak hour traffic on Wednesday (15 August 2007).

About 100 Metro Police officers brought the morning peak hour traffic to a near standstill when they blocked the N2 during a protest regarding staff restructuring, new grades and complaints about low wages.

They travelled from near the Athlone Power Station to the Civic Centre at a snails pace, and prevented motorists from overtaking their vehicles. The morning traffic was severely affected and irate motorists' complaints could be heard on radio stations throughout the day.

During the protest, they made use of official Metro Police vehicles and also carried their official firearms.

Zille's spokesperson, Robert McDonald, confirmed that disclipinary measure were to be instituted and that criminal charges had been laid against the offenders.
