Research studies conducted by the Medical Research Council shows that there has been an increase of between 12% and 14% in the number of teenage heroin cases in last year.

The problem appears to not only be isolated in South Africa and according to Andreas Pludderman, of the MRC's alcohol and drug abuse unit, the increased availability of the drug is affecting countries throughout the world.

The drug, which is used locally in a mixture of cheap dagga (marijuana) is termed "ungah" in Cape Town, "sugars" in Durban, "nyaope" in Pretoria and "pinch" in Mpumalanga. Its increased availability shows that it may possibly become more popular the tik (methamphetamine).
