Deputy President of the African National Congress (ANC), Jacob Zuma attended a community anti-crime meeting at Mitchell's Plain on Friday, 23 November 2007, where he addressed the issue of crime in the country.

Zuma stated that South Africa needs to get tougher on criminals in order to deal with crime effectively and that too much emphasis was placed on the rights of criminals as opposed to those of their victims.

Zuma's statements came barely a few hours after a savage shooting in Kewtown, Athlone (also on the Cape Flats) resulted in five people losing their lives and a number of others injured. The shooting incident is believed to be related to gangsterism.
