Traffic authorities were forced to close down the N2 freeway early this morning as a demonstration near Langa by about 2000 people turned violent. Police officers were shot at and were stoned as they battled to regain control of the situation.

The protests which began at about 4am came about as residents of Joe Slovo threatened to close down the N2 freeway if their demands regarding housing were not met. The group demanded that the government stop forcibly relocating them to Delft in order for the N2 Gateway housing devleopment to progress.

Both the incoming and outgoing lanes on the N2 were closed off between Jan Smuts and Vanguard Drives, while Vanguard Drive itself was also closed to traffic. Thousands of motorists suffered as a result of the blockages and were consequently late for work.
