Housing Minister Linidwe Sisulu announced at a Cape Town press meeting that the Department hoped to change its original project target, and now aimed to build between 26000 and 30000 houses by 2010.

This comes after the budget for the N2 Gateway Project was increased from 2 billion to 3 billion rands.

Amongst the changes in scope of the project comes an ambitious plan to not only build houses, but also to create an economic hub that will link the communities of Athlone and Langa.

This expansion aims to create supermarkets, bridges, a sports complex and a shopping complex as well as the 30 000 units of houses by 2010.
