Survey finds 75% support Death Penalty

by Staff Reporter
23 Jan 2007

A recent survey conducted by the Athlone Website (www.athlone.co.za) found that three out of four of the participants thought the Death Penalty should be reinstated.

The survey, which was concluded in January 2007, recorded the views of over 200 participants. Comments about Capital Punishment showed that most people were either strongly against it or strongly supported it while only few remain undecided.

The South African Legal System abolished the Death Penalty as a means of punishment, after being reviewed in the Constitutional Court. It was found to violate the right to life, was cruel, degrading and inhumane.

Most voters however, believe that it is a necessary punishment against serious offences.
