Cape Town Child Welfare has launched a 24 hour helpline to provide much needed support to children in crises. This helpline which is maintained from offices at the corner of Gleemore and Thornton Roads, Athlone, makes use of innovative technology to link callers to a national support network.

Effectively, 174 national child welfare organisations and 45 local Cape Town Child Welfare staff and volunteers are used to provide assistance to callers from anywhere in South Africa. According to the organisation, this wide circle therefore ensures that the person calling will receive the best level of appropriate service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This initiative was sparked off by the Isolabantwana (Eye on the Child) Programme and strengthens the network between the 10 projects run therein.

Niresh Ramklaas, chief executive of Cape Town Child Welfare, says that the system goes beyond what most other child welfare organisations around the world offer. The service gives vital strength and support to our Eye on the Child volunteers who are our eyes and ears on the ground in the communities where we work, and enables our social workers to truly offer round-the-clock support to children in crises. At the same time, it will ensure our staff can go about their work confident in the knowledge that they can call for help should the run into security problems.

The Helpkids Hotline number is 0800helpkids (or 0800 435754).
