A team of experienced engineers are to be deployed to the flood-hit low lying areas of the Western Cape.

Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela, Director General at the Department of Provincial and Local Government said the National Disaster Management Centre would deploy the team to support and advise the provincial and local government leadership.

According to reports prepared by the Western Cape Provincial Government and the City of Cape Town, about 40 000 dwellings and 18 000 people have been affected by the recent heavy rains.

Speaking at the Disaster Management Indaba on Thursday, Ms Msengana-Ndlela said the team will be undertaking a rapid assessment to identify hotspots where recurring disasters take place.

A state of disaster has now been declared in the province and this will assist government in mobilising human and financial resources for post-disaster recovery.

Ms Msengana-Ndlela said humanitarian support was currently being provided through the relevant disaster management structures as well as the Department of Social Development.

The areas worst affected were Philippi and nearby Kosovo, Kensington, Gugulethu, Langa and Khayelitsha and about 16 000 residents are in dire need of help.

Their homes have been damaged and a number of roads had flooded, causing scores of accidents.

Residents are also advised to remove dead branches from trees and secure furniture that can be blown over by wind.

The director general said the floods pointed to the urgency required for steps to be taken to 'gear up' to prevent, mitigate and be prepared for natural and human-induced disasters. - BuaNews
