Two men have been arrested in connection with the vandalism and cable theft from a City of Cape Town substation, which left 1800 homes and businesses in Manenberg without power on Sunday (20 May 2007).

The two men lived near the substation in Ruimte Road. Two others, whose names are known to the police, are still at large. Members of the SAPS Intelligence Unit are following up investigations.

"Residents are fed up with the disruptions caused by ongoing cable theft. They are now coming forward to help identify the perpetrators," says Cllr Pieter van Dalen, Chairman of the Cable Theft Task Team.

The special task team was established by the City of Cape Town to combat the theft of non-ferrous metals which has cost the municipality over R22 million during the past year alone.

Cllr van Dalen commended the task team investigators and SAPS for apprehending the Manenberg cable thieves in a matter of days.

"I appeal to the public to report any suspicious activity around substations to the City's dedicated 24 hour Cable Theft Hotline on 0800 222 771," he said.
