Police seize load of Abalone

Following an early-morning tip-off from the public, police seized abalone worth R1 million on Thursday, 13 July 2006.

According to Captain Randall Stoffels from the police's provincial communications division, members of the Flying Squad were doing routine patrols in Manenberg when a call came through about the "suspicious off-loading" of a truck in Athlone Industrial.

When police arrived at the scene, the suspects had already fled.

"There is only one road leading to the premises where the abalone was being off-loaded and we suspect that they fled when they saw the police approaching," Stoffels says.

Police searched the truck, which was parked at a transport company in Maslomoney Street, and confiscated 3 488 shucked abalone.

No arrests were made and anyone with information that might assist the police can phone Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.
