THE Safa Cape Town is poised to launch the 2008 Coca-Cola Knockout Cup, renowned as one of the major competitions in amateur soccer for nearly two decades.

Last year the Safa CT was buoyed by a R320 000 cash boost to run the knockout competition. The sponsorship is expected to increase for the forthcoming KO series that gets going on Saturday, 21 June.

Songezi Nayo, who was appointed by the South African Football Association (Safa) in February to administer the affairs of the Safa CT for a six-month period, confirmed the sponsorship developments yesterday.

Nayo says the sponsorship will cover prize money for the senior men's, women's and u/17's knockout competitions. There will also be cash incentives for individual award winners.

In 2007, Woodlands United received R20 000 for their efforts to win the men's knockout title, while the UWC women?s side and UWC Provincial Academy u/17s pocketed R8 000 and R6 000 for finishing tops in their respective competitions.

Gilbert Kruger, competitions chairperson for the Safa CT, says that 256 teams from the 25 Local Football Associations (LFAs) qualified for the first round draw, after winning elimination matches in their respective LFAs.

Kruger says the knockout cup matches will take place at centralised venues.

The Rocklands Sports Complex in Mitchell's Plain and the William Herbert Sportsfield in Wynberg are being considered as venues for the first round matches.

The knockout cup series is currently the flagship inter-club competition in the Safa CT, after the demise of the Super League and sponsored Challenge Cup contests.

The league and challenge cup competitions lost appeal among thousands of players, after being disrupted by the conflict and confusion that dogged the Safa CT last year.

An inter-LFA competition for senior and junior representative teams will also kick off after the first round of knockout cup matches.
