President Thabo Mbeki on Sunday commended the new Anglican Archbishop, Thabo Makgoba, for dedicating his life to serving the people.

President Mbeki said he had no doubt the new Anglican Archbishop would continue the great struggle for non-racialism, non-sexism and the integration of communities that have been forcibly divided into racial groups.

The church must continue its exemplary work of giving hope to the marginalised, following on the footsteps of the great patriots and leaders of our people, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane, he said.

"Because of this, all of us have no hesitation to hail you as a fellow-worker, because ahead of all of us as a nation is a long and arduous journey as we strive to achieve the goal of a better life for all our people," he said.

"We are happy to recall the eminent contribution made by leaders of the Anglican Church, and the church as a whole in the struggle to liberate our people from the apartheid crime against humanity," he said.

The retired Reverend Thabo Cecil Makgoba, Bishop of Grahamstown, was elected as the new Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa at an Elective Assembly held in September last year in Cape Town.

He succeeds Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane who retired at the end of 2007.

Bishop Makgoba is the youngest Archbishop in the history of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa.

The President was accompanied by his wife Zanele Mbeki and Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. - BuaNews
