There's a Kat among the Falcons... and it is certain to increase competitiveness in the Western Province Super League series.

Talk that Dutch softballer Kat van den Broek would be joining Falcons-SAPS was confirmed when she debuted in Falcons' 6-1 win over Old Mutual Cubs in a second round league match at Turfhall Stadium in Crawford on Saturday.

Van den Broek previously enjoyed a two-year stint with Tantasport in the Super League, but opted to turnout for title-chasing Falcons this season.

Falcons and defending champions, Westridge Yankees, who each have 14 points to their credit, are engaged in a keen tussle for supremacy.

Yankees trounced Tantasport 14-3 on Saturday. Van den Broek, a utility infielder, donned the catchers gear and rendered fine support for Nicki Jones, who struck out six Cubs batters, while allowing four scattered hits. Cubs' Lynn Conning hit a two-bagger.

Cubs' Jaunelle Phillips fanned four batters, but battled to contain Kim Nicholson and Celeste Marks, both batting 2-3.

Battswood, meanwhile, notched their first wins when they beat Ridgeville 16-7 and 10-9 at the weekend. Battswood fought back to win 10-9, after being behind 9-1 in the fifth inning on Sunday.

Ridgeville, without a win thus far this season, outhit their opponents 13-6, but conceded several costly walks. Batts' Lorraine Primo conceded 11 hits before making way for Natasha Hansen in the last inning.

Colleen Duarte, 4-4, Rhonda Minnies, 3-4 and Bonita Playton, 2-2 including a three-run homer, were Ridgeville's best batters.

Promising teen pitcher Terry Minnies kept Batts in check until the last inning when she tired. Shireen Roberts and Kim Veroni were called on to pitch in a desperate attempt to defend the lead, but they were both off target.

Danielle Ford, 2-2, Marlene Pietersen and Glenda Herman, both 1-2, kept the victors in the picture. Other Super League scores: Glenthorn 12 Strandfontein Mets 0; Old Mutual Cubs 10 Ridgeville 1.
