The matric examinations got off to a smooth start on Monday with no serious hiccups reported in the country, the Department of Basic Education said.

In a statement, the department said it was satisfied with the first day of the exams.

Around 51 000 learners wrote Information Technology Theory P2 and Computer Applications Technology Theory Paper 2 yesterday.

Most matrics will write their first exam on Thursday - an Afrikaans paper.

Today, learners are writing Dance Studies, Electrical Technology, German, Hebrew and Portuguese. Tomorrow, the first history paper will be written.

In total, 198 papers will be written in 39 subjects during the six-week long exam period by about 642 000 students.

While some believe the three-week public servants strike, as well as the month long World Cup break, could affect results, the Basic Education Department is confident pupils will do well.

Marking of scripts will start in all provinces other than Gauteng from 4 - 15 December. Results will be released on 6 January. - BuaNews
