City's Estate Agent signage deadline extended

There has been an excellent response from local estate agents and other property marketing agents to the City of Cape Town's campaign to curb the unsightly clutter of illegal estate agents' signage across the Cape Metropole.

In terms of the new system every estate agent and auctioneer will, from 1 July, be required to register individually with the municipality for permission to display property marketing boards and directional signs for weekend show houses on Council property.

"In the past two weeks hundreds have been registering their agencies early and applying for their six permit stickers for showhouse directional boards and the City wishes to thank those who have responded so positively", said Ms Debbie Evans, Development Control Officer in the Environmental Resource Management Directorate.

Registration will continue into the beginning of July and, because the first of July is a showhouse day, the City is granting a week's grace period to agents to submit their applications and to allow late applicants to get their display permit stickers.

About 75% of the applications received have already been processed and permit stickers have either already been collected or are awaiting collection. Agents whose applications were received by yesterday should have their stickers by the middle of next week.

Agents should note that the grace period for obtaining permits does not mean that a free-for-all will be permitted on Sunday, 1 July, as the display rules are still applicable. From 7 July onwards, any directional board without a display permit will be removed by the City's contractors and those responsible will be charged.
