The City has released a Draft Land Use Management Policy on Gated or Enclosed Developments for general public comment and discussion.

According to the chairperson of the multi-party, multi-portfolio working committee dealing with this matter, Cllr Owen Kinahan, the draft is aimed at balancing the right of communities to safe and secure neighbourhoods with the need to integrate areas, improve access and equity in a responsible manner and fill a current policy vacuum.

"In addition to serving as a guide to developers, it will provide City officials and decision-makers with a common reference framework in assessing and determining applications involving gated communities, as part of Council's statutory development management function," he said.

Kinahan invited communities and the public at large to comment on the draft policy before the closing date of 13 July 2007.

"We are going the extra mile in public participation on this matter. The draft policy will also be on the agenda for discussion by each of the City's 23 Subcouncils at their meetings in June. Citizens are entitled to address their local Subcouncil on this matter, provided they register in advance".

"In addition, a public hearing is to be held on 26 July 2007. Principally aimed at interested and affected organisations rather than individuals, it will allow further opportunity for input in this regard," he said.

Subsequent to this and consideration of inputs received, it is envisaged that a final draft will be submitted to Council for adoption in the latter half of the year.
